Benefits of Dental Implants

Jones & Zirker Family Dentistry Provide dental implants at their Iowa City office.

Losing a tooth can be traumatic to your appearance and self-esteem. Thanks to the technology and technique behind dental implants, it doesn’t have to be a lasting issue. Most people have heard of dental implants, but unless you’ve had one, they’re a bit of a mystery.

What Is a Dental Implant?

Once it’s completed, a dental implant just looks like a tooth, but it’s more complicated than what you see on the surface. The part that looks like a tooth is actually a crown placed over a small titanium cylinder that’s been attached to the jaw. Titanium is used because it’s able to meld to human bone without being rejected by the body.  The implant can be placed either in the bone or on it. After that part of the process is completed, a crown that’s been customized to go with your natural teeth, is placed on the titanium cylinder.

Dental Implants – The Benefits

Dental implants have many advantages. One of the best qualities is that they can last a lifetime if they are cared for properly. Other benefits relate to the patient’s daily activities.

  • Your appearance improves
  • Speech improves because you aren’t missing teeth or dealing with loose dentures
  • Self-esteem improves
  • You can eat with confidence and without pain
  • Some patients find fewer digestive issues because they’re able to chew food more thoroughly
  • The implants don’t have to be removed like dentures or partials

For dental implants to work, patients need to have healthy gums and enough bone so the implant can attach. A dentist who performs implant procedures can talk with you about other possible health issues to consider such as diabetes or heart disease.

Another question people typically have is whether implants are covered by your dental insurance. That depends on the policy, although typically they are not covered. Sometimes health insurance will cover part of the cost depending on the plan and how you lost your tooth in the first place.
